Early New Moon international box office results show impressive numbers
Posted by Andrew on November 19th, 2009 | Comments (54)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Moon is already pulling in impressive ticket numbers overseas!

Summit reported Thursday afternoon that at midnight showings on 466 screens in Australia, the movie took in AUS$1.7 million ($1.6 million). It sailed past the previous Australian midnight record set by “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith,” which took in AUS$1.26 million ($1.2 million) in 2005.

In France, where “Moon” completed its first day, it was No. 1 with 488,000 admissions, translating to $4.26 million, from 751 theaters. By comparison, “Twilight” scored 140,960 admissions, $1.158 million, on its first day in that country.

In Italy, partial returns put the movie’s gross at €$1.83 million ($2.7 million) from 625 screens. The movie is shaping up as the third-highest Wednesday opener in Italy, behind only “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.”

Meanwhile in Spain, “Moon” drew €1.475 million ($2.2 million) on 652 screens. In Spain, it also ranked as the third-best Wednesday opening ever — behind “Order of the Phoenix” and “Half-Blood Prince.”

I’m irrationally jealous of people who got to see this at midnight considering i’m seeing it in 15 hours :-) So glad that it’s coming out on today in the UK rather than the 27th as originally planned i don’t think i would have been able to stand waiting for a week while reading all the reviews!!!
I’m so excited I don’t think i’ll be able to sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by jemma-c — 11/19/2009 @ 4:52 pm

I’m not surprised about the numbers in Australia nearly everyone I know went to see it Wednesday night/Thursday morning!

Also some cinema’s have about 38 showings of it a day for the first week.

Seeing it on saturday!!!!

Comment by Erin — 11/19/2009 @ 4:55 pm

Went to the first showing here in Holland and it was packed! And there were people from all ages..
Everyone seemed to enjoy it too. People were whispering good things around me :P
No doubt it’s gonna pass Twilight..

Comment by Sem — 11/19/2009 @ 5:15 pm

So there is one question no one ever asks and one answer we don’t hear anymore. When is the last time Kristen was seen with her (ex) boyfriend Michael Angarano? Are they broken up? Whenever Kristen or Rob is asked if they are together one answer they used to give that we don’t hear anymore is Kris has a boyfriend. So I assume she no longer is with Angaro. This does not mean she is with Rob but with them being together so much for so long it is not a stretch to imagine it is so.

Comment by TwiMomGran — 11/19/2009 @ 5:18 pm

Clearly all the bad reviews mean nothing. This movie is going to make a lot of money…unfortunately.

Comment by Maggie — 11/19/2009 @ 5:20 pm

It is also possible Angaro has been told to stay away and let people imagine what they will.

Comment by TwiMomGran — 11/19/2009 @ 5:23 pm

I am seeing it tonight at midnight PST. I already have my ticket. Then I will see it tomorrow again with my girlfriend. I CAN’T WAIT!

Comment by TwiMomGran — 11/19/2009 @ 5:24 pm

You know, I love twilight and all this, but I think a little part of me would die if it surpasses harry potter. Just because of the higher quality of acting and the books themselves. :/

Comment by Alex — 11/19/2009 @ 5:24 pm

Maggie, I have not heard one bad review.

Comment by TwiMomGran — 11/19/2009 @ 5:25 pm

Maggie:

Ultimately, reviews are opinions.

Alex:

I’ve never been a fan of Harry Potter, surprisingly. In fact, I tend to enjoy Stephenie’s style of writing more.

Comment by E — 11/19/2009 @ 5:33 pm

Don’t worry Alex, it will NEVER! surpass Harry Potter, neither the next twilight films, even tho I love twilight and I can’t wait to watch New moon (here in Mexico opened today but I will go tommorrow) I’m pretty sure it won’t surpass any of the HP films, just because of more people of all ages watch HP, but of course this one will make a lot more than Twilight, and I’m also sure it will make a lot more internationally than USA. And about the reviews, even tho they are just opinions it do affect films…

Comment by Abraham — 11/19/2009 @ 6:06 pm

what about New Zealand.New Zealand got it yesterday………….
it was amazing
going 2 c it again this weekend!!!cant wait

Comment by jess — 11/19/2009 @ 6:42 pm

its going to be the best damn movie ever i feel it…chris weitz deserves this..he did an amazing job!

Comment by Shobi — 11/19/2009 @ 7:01 pm

Alex, the acting in Twilight is a lot better than Harry Potter for your information.
Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson are the worst actors on the planet and I feel sorry for Rupert Grint and Rob Pattinson because they had to work with them. Yes, the older actors are better in Potter because they are seasoned british professionals e.g. Alan Rickman, Garry Oldman etc… They are the best of Britian and its not fair to compare any actor to them.

Comment by Sarah — 11/19/2009 @ 7:07 pm

Just saw New Moon, very good! I wanted to give my verdict and get some feedback.

In general I thought the movie was excellent and a million times better than Twilight. The camera angles and cgi was excellent and the acting was 10 times better, I was very happy that Kristen’s performance had improved a LOT, and Robert’s acting improved a bit too. Chris Weitz is a great director. As a 23 year old I really enjoyed the film. The script was amazing and exactly like the book, I was very happy about that.

My negative comments are that the score was a bit too loud and dramaticly cheezy in places, and I didn’t like the “Running scene” when Alice looks into the future, sooo cheezy!!!

There were bits of dialogue that were cheezy too but thats to be expected with these books.

Overall, very happy with the film, it was about 50 times better than the Twilight movie and I intend on seeing New Moon again in the cinema next week.

Well done Chris Weitz, next time go easy on the score and cheesy running scene lol.

On a final note: I HATE seeing poor Peter Facinelli wear those AWFULL costumes as Carlisle. He looks awful! Why do they do that to him? Carlisle should look cooler!

Comment by Kerry — 11/19/2009 @ 7:17 pm

Also, isn’t vampire Bella meant to be georgous?!
That was a bit dissapointing considering i’ve seen hot picturs of Kristen in magazines and she looks AMAZING!

Comment by Kerry — 11/19/2009 @ 7:19 pm

COMPLETELY AGREE with u kerry!
the score took away from the dramatic feel of the movie in some scenes and was WAY too cheesy.i had a feeling they were tryin 2 make it sound more mystical…didnt work.
And with the runnning scene-WTF was with that!!
the clothes-the slow motion running-kristen looked the same-worse even.shes supposed 2 look way different than normal bella.she looked….wierd

Comment by jess — 11/19/2009 @ 7:31 pm

oh and at the start-doesnt edward take bella 2 skwl….thought that was a bit off.theyr supposed 2 b like attatched 2 teh hip.

Comment by jess — 11/19/2009 @ 7:33 pm

no he doesnt take her to school…read the book again and you will see that he waits for her in the parking lot…..so they stuck to the book there too

Comment by Shobi — 11/19/2009 @ 7:37 pm

and as for the future scene, i loved it….it was only for a second…so HELLO when they DO make breaking dawn kristens gonna be a 1000 times better……………. so stop complaining about it..i thought it was pretty awesome and i loved that they were RUNNING because um bellas fave vampire “gift” is their speed….so chris weitz thought about that too..

Comment by Shobi — 11/19/2009 @ 7:38 pm

Yeah I suppose Shobi, but my whole cinema laughed so I had to mention it as a negative point, not positive. Even I thought it was funny, and I love the books like crazy.

Comment by Kerry — 11/19/2009 @ 7:43 pm

No Jess, on her birthday Bella meets Edward and Alice in the parkling lot in the book.

Comment by Kerry — 11/19/2009 @ 7:45 pm

yes i know the cinema laughed for me too…which kinda bugged me i didnt find it funny at all!! i thought it was like…flowy and romantic…but i guess i dont see it like you guys do.

Comment by Shobi — 11/19/2009 @ 7:57 pm

Yes the score peeved me off at times. It was just annoyingly cheesy.

Comment by Julia — 11/19/2009 @ 8:15 pm

To those who haven’t seen the movie because they were not in a country that had a earlier starting date like New Zealand or Australia. I will tell you to buy your tickets.

I went to Midnight screenig in Australia and the movie is fantastic. So get a ticket so you will agree with those like me who have seen it. That New Moon is one of the best movies of 2009!

Comment by Kayla — 11/19/2009 @ 9:02 pm

Just came back from the 10 oclock show ( we got to see it before midnight in Canada :) ) and it was AMAZING and trust me this is someone who is highly critical of everything and hated twilight. Some parts were still unintentionally funny and the wolves werent the most realistic but the story line and visual aspect of it was just amazing. I totes vote Chris Weitz to redirect for BD.

Comment by Sam — 11/19/2009 @ 10:30 pm

That movie was AMAZING

Comment by Danielle — 11/19/2009 @ 11:59 pm

I loved it! It was absolutely amazing! I want to see it again. I was getting kind of nervous that maybe it wouldn’t live up to all the hype, but it was so much better!

Comment by Leila — 11/20/2009 @ 12:30 am

Comment by Bonnie — 11/20/2009 @ 2:47 am

Watched it at 12.01 gmt – Fantastic. Watching New Moon again tomorrow woo hoo

Comment by Michelle — 11/20/2009 @ 3:25 am

I agree with Kerry about most things, but I liked the score a lot.
About acting, Dakota deserves to be mentioned…she was creepy!!!
Chris Weitz really nailed it with this movie! It was awesome! My only concern was about the makeup…they should go easy on the lipstick for the male actors, really!
It was totally worth waiting in line for almost 3 hours for the midnight showing!

Comment by meggie — 11/20/2009 @ 4:55 am

I was one of the first people to see it in Florida! I got to see it BEFORE the Midnight showing. I had these passes to see it at 9:30 and to tell you the truth, there were not that many people. A lot of people were there, though. And I mean these were the die-hard Twi-hard fans here! :D
They were AWESOME and the movie was AMAZING!!!
I cried, I laughed (a lot, the movie is hilarious, no joke) I smiled, I awed, I screamed (not where Edward or Jacob were shirtless)
That movie was by far the best. EVER.
I think it was SO much better than Twilight.
I’m already planning on seeing it again with my two little brothers because they want to see it too.
I loved it!!! It was AWESOME. Oh and after the movie, I changed from Team Edward to Team Switzerland because that movie makes you change your mind, at least for me.
Team Bella
Team Switzerland
xoxo Naty

Comment by Nathalie — 11/20/2009 @ 5:01 am

I’m from Australia and hated the fact I had to wait 24 hours to see New Moon. I loved it. I thought it was so different from Catherine (I love her but I gotta say I felt this was more adult than Twilight) was so so happy with the translation. Of course there are some parts I wish were included but I loved it anyway. 9/10! I’m now sooo buzzed to watch Eclipse. If onlythat was coming out sooner than June. Don’t know if I can wait that long! Argh!

Thanks for your awesome site and imprint episodes! :D Hope you loved New Moon too!

Kellers xoxo

Comment by Kelly — 11/20/2009 @ 5:44 am

just watched it! It was 10 x better than Twilight! wanna see it again.

Laughed so hard when they showed the scene where Alice saw Bella as a vampire.

Comment by mj — 11/20/2009 @ 6:15 am

I watched it at midnight (last night to me now). It was AWESOME! I feel that some people who haven’t read the books may not like it because they don’t know what this part of the story is building up to but it SO DELIVERS! READ, PEOPLE, READ!
I was seriously worried about the Volturi but they are some seriously creepy peeps! The werewolves are such BOYS …which is perfect. And, even though I can’t usually stand Kristen’s acting, I thought she did a fantastic job… great New Moon Bella moments (you pulled it off, girl). Lastly, Billy Burke steals the show; love him, love him, love him!
RPatz was beautiful and so was Taylor.

Comment by Kim — 11/20/2009 @ 6:54 am

I saw it last night!! It was a speciel offer, where you got to see Twilight and New Moon!! It was AMAZING!!!! but it’s got bad reviews!! Whats up with that! I have a newspaper in my bag, and that newspaper gave New Moon 2 out of 6 stars!!!!! WTF ?!?!?!?!

Comment by Signe Skovgaard Madsen — 11/20/2009 @ 7:22 am

I went to the midnight show last night and I was blown away. The CGI in this movie was fantastic. When Jacob and Paul were fighting the hair on the back of my neck stood on end. I am a huge fan of the books and I thought it stayed pretty close. Best movie of the year. I thought everything was put together well. I do agree that the future scene was a bit cheesy. Great humor and action. Ashley and Kristen looked amazing. Still not impressed with Niki. GO SEE THIS MOVIE if you like the books you won’t be disappointed.

i just can’t wait to see midnight release alone. seriously… i know where we were there were 5 sold out screens at our theater and 7 sold out screens in another theater and then like an hour away they had 3 more sold out screens…. i definitely think it will be bigger than twilight and hopefully breaking dawn gets greenlighted in the next few days.

Comment by Emily — 11/20/2009 @ 8:01 am

Ohhhh myyyy freaking gosh it was awesome. A gazillion times better that twilight. Loved it.

Comment by Tiara — 11/20/2009 @ 8:02 am

Comment by Emily — 11/20/2009 @ 8:03 am

we got to see it on Thursday night at 9:00pm in Hollywood!!! It was great… The only thing I regret was not taking tissue because you literally feel the pain. Too many great parts of the movie to mention! So get out to the theatre and see for yourselves. It was so good even the Hubby enjoyed it!

Comment by Erica — 11/20/2009 @ 8:55 am

I seen it last night in Colorado USA. It was AMAZING. They had nine screens going and they were all full. I got there two hours before and was the 95th person in line. They had a line out the door and around the back of the building.

Alice’s vision was a little off, and yeah some of the people in the theater did laugh. But all in all it was great. I am deffinetly going to see it again.

Anna K’s perfomnace was outstanding. She stole that scene. She is going to be an awsome actress.

On a side not. While I was standing in line I started to talk to the family that was beihind me. Come to find out it was Stephenie Meyer’s aunt. No joke. They had an extra ticket and offered it to me becasue I was there mymyself. She asked if there was anyone I could call that would want to come out. I thought that was very sweet. Unfortunetly I didnt have my phone so I ended up seing it by myself. But id do it again and probably will.

Rob, Kristen, and Taylor were OUTSTANDING. I have aways been Team Switzerland, and now even more. I couldnt pick between the two even if it were life or death lol. Keep the numbers going guys we can make this the biggest box office hit in history EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment by Sammie — 11/20/2009 @ 8:56 am

FUCKING AMAZING!!! FUCKING EDWARD IN ITALY!!! JAKES FUCKING BODY!!!! THE GUYS WERE BABES!!!!! :P *SIGH*

Comment by Catherine — 11/20/2009 @ 10:09 am

@Alex I agree with you with New Moon beating Harry Potter.

@Sarah I respectfully disagree with you on Dan and Emma acting.

Comment by Candice — 11/20/2009 @ 10:13 am

saw the film yesterday and I’ve been thinking of one thing since; what happened with the clumpsy bella?

Comment by Julia — 11/21/2009 @ 12:57 am

Box office totals surpassed Harry Potter at just the midnight showing. All indications are it will break both Dark Knight and Harry Potter.

Great movie, true to the book. Kristen nailed the Bella part, Rob was a tortured Edward and Taylor..surprised me he was really Jacob. Wish he would have called her Bells more that is my only critique.

Bring on Eclipse and Breaking Dawn!!
