New Moon’s Volvo change, cliffhanger ending explained
MTV has a new article up analyzing five things you may not have known about New Moon. Three of the items are especially interesting to serious Twilight fans (because the other two we’ve heard about before). Here is their blurb on the new-Volvo situation:
If his lousy parking job distracted you, perhaps you didn’t notice that when Edward pulled into Forks High, his famed Volvo was no longer gray, as it was in the novels and the first movie. Hey, Chris Weitz, what gives? “I’ve taken a real spanking for this, a lot of heat,” the director explained. “I’ll tell you exactly why: Volvo wanted to give us a new, different car so I didn’t want to paint it exactly the same silver color, because then [Twilighters] would be saying, ‘Why are they trying to say that it’s the same car; it’s obviously not.’ So, I thought, ‘Well, I’ll choose a new color!’ And I thought I would choose slate black, not a reflective black, because it actually absorbs light and it would reflect the mood and melancholy and depression [of his character]. I know I got it wrong, I apologize for that. But that is my reasoning.

I never understood the intense hatred that people had for the simple fact that they changed what car Edward drove. It really makes no difference to me if he’s in a station wagon or a 4×4. But I hope that this statement will allow people to relax a bit about the subject, like a bit of closure.

I love everything Chris Weitz did with New Moon. But changing the color of the Volvo was a major no no.

Awhhh poor chris!
I was kinda annoyed when I first heard about it but now I wish everyone would just get over it!
Chris for BD!!
Comment by amira_xP — 11/23/2009 @ 10:21 am
I agree, amira_xP I vote Chris does BD XD
Comment by Megan — 11/23/2009 @ 10:36 am
well… i can definitely see volvo’s point because they’re wanting to advertise a new car and i see chris’s point too… and it’s really stupid, at least it’s a hot car, expensive, and gets the whole point across. it’s not like chris gave edward fangs or something.

So can we say that Summit and Chris sold out to Volve. I mean come on, you can’t tell me that Summit or Chris could of told them we want an C30 or a S60 and couldn’t of gotten it. Heck both the C30 and the S60 are 15k cheaper then the XC70. But Volve dropped the S60 this year and may drop the C30 in 2011. So they wanted a way to drive intrest in their new model. Well guess what they did.

At first, I was shocked that the car was changed, becasue it was vital, like in Eclipse. “the sun glinted off the silver volvo in my rearview mirror. ‘Oh crap’” But it’s cool, they have Emmett driving a white jeep, when its supposed to be red. Just don’t change the Porshe.
Comment by Janell — 11/23/2009 @ 11:42 am
its no big deal and that’s what i thought it was black for!!!!
Comment by Jessica — 11/23/2009 @ 12:48 pm
Matt, they have to get permission to use a volvo, and that was Volvos agreement to let them use it. “ok, you can use a volvo, but it has to be our newest one.”
Its not selling out, its movie politics. Chill out.
Comment by Tracy — 11/23/2009 @ 12:51 pm
i was surprised that they changed the volvo too but i totally understand the logistics of getting the same car etc. i am cool with the new volvo ~ i think i might actually like it better…
anyhoo ~ reading that it was chris’ idea to end the film with *you know what* made me love him even more! since it wasn’t originally in it! now, that would have been a tragedy.
chris weitz for BD!
Comment by shauna — 11/23/2009 @ 1:28 pm
Yea, I still think the ending was a cop out. Complete let down. I don’t think I’ll be pushing for him to return for BD.
Comment by Stacey — 11/23/2009 @ 1:33 pm
1) The Volvo was crap! Seriously, how hard is it to get the same car? Or at least the same color? Or at least mention “Wow… Cullen upgraded his car”.
2)The car change and Jane/Jasper’s hair were my only big complaints.
3)I actually liked the ending and I think Weitz would do a great job with Breaking Dawn (if it’s only 1 movie…)
Comment by Abbey O. — 11/23/2009 @ 2:05 pm
I don’t see the heated debate over the damn Volvo. Seriously, it’s business people and one that was probably done between Summit and Volvo. I hardly doubt Chris was given much choice about anything. The first thing that crossed my mind when I saw the new car in the trailer was “ok, you advertise for us. And we’ll advertise for you.” nothing more than that.
I personally loved this movie. It was damn near perfection and it had me teary in many parts. I loved the ending. It was the perfect cliffhanger to eclipse. It was a great addage since there was really no cliffhanger on the book. It was great andect you wanting more. I definitely agree with having Chris back for breaking dawn. He has a real understanding on what the story is and he’ll once again do justice to the mess that is BD
Comment by Liliana — 11/23/2009 @ 2:22 pm
I completely and utterly agree with everything Liliana said. ditto for all of that. :) way to put it.

Ugh! Some people are such hypocrites. Like the twilight ending was changed too, yet were people mad? No! And this ending was awesome. I like the proposal scene sooner because it shows how much edward really likes her and it also shows how he thinks of jacob as having a chance of steeling bella for him. New moon was great. It was awesome. I loved everything about it. Chris Weitz did an awesome job.
Comment by Cornelius Vanderbilt — 11/23/2009 @ 4:06 pm
Oops I put steel instead of steal. Anywho u guys know what I mean.
Comment by Cornelius Vanderbilt — 11/23/2009 @ 4:07 pm
Oh and about the car, ITS JUST A CAR! I really didn’t care about Edwards car. This movie is about bella and edward, and bella’s truck (hers IS extremely vital). Edwards isn’t that important. This new car just shows how filthy rich they are. So I really had no problem with it.
Comment by Cornelius Vanderbilt — 11/23/2009 @ 4:09 pm
for me, that volvo was an epic fail. He could have easily repainted it. i am so obsessed with the idea of a silver volvo ( i own an old red one) that i feel like it is another character in the books. I didn’t care what make it was, it was probably only mentioned once, plus i was no big fan of the one in twilight. the important thing was that it was a “silver” volvo and the make be damned.
Comment by Holly C. — 11/23/2009 @ 5:10 pm
This whole Volvo controversy is stupid. ITS A CAR. It’s part of Edward’s attempt to blend in with the humans. They just needed an expensive car that doesn’t stand out. Relax folks.
Also, Edward did propose at the end of New Moon, after the vote but before the epilogue.
Comment by SarahK — 11/23/2009 @ 5:55 pm
OMG GET OVER THE CAR PEOPLE..its in the damn movie and its in Eclipse, theres nothing we can do about it now….
as for the ending, i agree..people are being hypocrites….if there wasnt so much fuss about the twilight ending, why new moon? I mean ATLEAST HE DID PROPOSE! what if he hadnt?? then what huh? be HAPPY that its in there..and it was done in a great way.
this movie was spot on and close to the book, and having been so, i still dont understand why people complain
Comment by Shobi — 11/23/2009 @ 9:36 pm
Frankly I think everyone is making this a bigger deal then it really is. Yeah, the car is different…so what?
Then for the ending, I thought it was a good way to end the book. As SarahK said Edward does propose in the epilogue, so I’m glad its was in the movie.
Comment by Stephanie — 11/23/2009 @ 10:48 pm
oh, who cares – It’s still a volvo! I say good on chris for making a change!!
Comment by Liz — 11/24/2009 @ 1:14 am
GOOD ON YA CHRIS!
Comment by Bianca — 11/24/2009 @ 1:20 am
I did notice the change with the Volvo, but I didn’t think it was a big deal at the time. To tell you the truth, I didn’t even like the volvo from the first movie very much, so a change is good.
The ending was awesome, especially for all the fans who have read all the books!! I never heard so many people cussing and yelling at a black screen so much after a movie ends, so it was pretty funny.
Great Job Chris, this movie was soooooooo much better then the first one!!!!!
Comment by Malloree — 11/24/2009 @ 6:51 am
cornelius, the proposal was in new moon. I don’t get why people aren’t realising this! sorry on a different topic…
Comment by seraah — 11/24/2009 @ 11:25 pm
i think they should have at least explained in the movie where his c30 went, i mean it just shows the new black grocerie-getter without even explaining why it changed, and as far as the director wanting to stick to the book, well, in the book, he had the same SILVER sports car volvo from twilight all the way to BD, so the director is NOT sticking to the book
Comment by john smith — 11/25/2009 @ 10:56 am
its hard to be serious about a movie when you watch it and all you see is obvious advertising…and if youll notice when bella has the flashback about the bad guys and edward pulling up in the silver volvo, notice how it doesnt show the car sliding around the corner….you just hear it rev and it shows edward walking towards the bad guys, cuz they didnt want to show the silver c30 again cuz they dont want attention taken away from the black new SUV that hes driving….come on people its the little things that you have to notice
Comment by john smith — 11/25/2009 @ 10:59 am
at seraah
yea i know im all for the proposal i just hate how people are bickering about how it ended there, because thats not how it ends in the book. i just wanted to bring out the fact that no one said anything about the ending in the twilight movie and it doesnt end the same way as the book.
Comment by Cornelius Vanderbilt — 11/25/2009 @ 5:51 pm
Plain and Simple it was a good movie. There is no way in this world they would be able to please the books millions of readers in a two hour movie and even if it was longer. Everyone reading the books pictures things differently even when reading the same exact words. I keep the books separate from the movies, when I see the movies I expect the basic storyline to be the same and get excited when details match the books but I never expect it to be exactly like the book, keeping this in mind, I can enjoy the movies without nickpicking every detail.
