Along with Aro and Marcus, Caius rose to power in the vampire world thousands of years ago. Carlisle spent some time with Caius and the rest of the Volturi when he was struggling to understand his nature. Caius still does not understand Carlisle's vegetarian tendencies.
In New Moon, Caius is opposed to letting Bella leave Volterra because she knows too much about the vampire world. He doesn't agree with Aro's decision to let Bella go, but makes do with threatening Edward, Bella and Alice with a future visit to make sure they've changed Bella. In Breaking Dawn, Caius tries to find every excuse to eliminate the Cullens. He has Irina destroyed, to tempt Kate and Tanya, and tries to label the Quileute "werewolves" as "Children of the Moon," to create a reason to start a violent battle, but fails when Edward describes the werewolves as "shape-shifters."
Classic Quotes--
"She knows too much. You have exposed our secrets." (New Moon, pg. 478)
"And we will visit you as well. To be sure that you follow through on you side. Were I you, I would not delay too long. We do not offer second chances." (New Moon, pg. 481)
"So many pointless rules, so many unnecessary laws you create for yourself, Carlisle. How is it possible that you defend the breaking of one that truly matters?" (Breaking Dawn, pg. 686)
"We see the child, Carlisle. Do not treat us as fools." (Breaking Dawn, pg. 687)
"How can you abide this infamy? Why do we stand here impotently in the face of such an outrageous crime, covered by such a ridiculous deception?" (Breaking Dawn, pg. 702)
"Now she has taken full responsibility." (Breaking Dawn, pg. 708)
