Personal History—
James has a history of hunting down humans who are being protected by vampires,
which he reveals to Bella when he is preparing to kill her. He tells her the story
of another human he had hunted, who turned out to be Alice, but the vampire who was
protecting her turned her before James could get to her. In vengeance, James killed that vampire.
(Twilight, pg. 448).
When James sees Bella in the baseball field, being protected by a large coven of
vampires, he sees another great challenge for himself and starts hunting her.
His plans, however, do not turn out as he expected. Even though Bella brings
herself to him (Twilight, pg. 443), the Cullens show up before James is able
to kill her, and they rip him apart and burn him (Twilight, pg. 451), but not before he is able
to bite her. To prevent her from turning, Edward sucks out James' venom
from the wound, further testing his resistence to her blood. Fortunately, he is
successful (Twilight, pg. 456).
