Jane

The Basics—

  • Name: Jane
  • Date of Birth: Unknown
  • Place of Birth: Unknown
  • Current Residence: Volterra, Italy
  • Status: Vampire
  • Date of Transformation: Unknown
  • Source of Transformation: Aro

Physical Appearance—

  • Hair Color: Pale Brown (New Moon, pg. 456)
  • Eye Color: Vampire Red (New Moon, pg. 456)
  • Height: "Tiny"
  • Other:As “tiny as Alice,” as well as sporting a slim body. Her hair is a pale brown and short. Her eyes are wide and she has a “full-lipped face” that would make “a Botticelli angel look like a gargoyle” (New Moon, pg. 456). Bella initially mistakes her for a boy until she realizes that she has a face that is “too pretty for a boy," (New Moon, pg. 456).

Associations—

  • Family: Alec (her twin brother)
  • Significant Other: Unknown
  • Friends: The Volturi
  • Occupation: High-ranking member of the Volturi Guard

Personality/Characteristics—

  • Special Abilities/Talents: Has the ability to inflict unendurable pain with her mind. (New Moon, pg. 475)
  • Interests: Loyalty to the Volturi and inflicting pain whenever possible.
  • Description: Jane is clearly a powerful character. From the beginning, Bella notes how everyone treats her with a reverent sort of respect and realizes why after witnessing Jane use her power on Edward. Jane is clearly amused by her powers, as demonstrated when she wears a “beatific smile” while torturing Edward (New Moon, pg. 474). She shows this same pleasure when she needlessly uses her powers on a newborn vampire, Bree, in Eclipse. Even after Bree has given the information demanded of her, Jane continues her torture, causing Edward to remark that, “She’ll tell you anything you want to know. You don’t have to do that.” Jane’s response is simply, “Oh I know,” (Eclipse, pg. 574). However, she becomes rather frustrated and vicious upon discovering that her powers don’t affect Bella (Eclipse, pg. 476). Her joy in using her power and her anger when it fails to work properly demonstrate the pride she takes in herself and her vicious talents.

    Miscellaneous-

    • Actress in Film(s): Dakota Fanning

    Personal History—

Jane, along with her twin brother, Alec, was sought out by the Volturi at a young age. While still very young, Jane and her brother were found guilty of witchcraft and burned at the stake. As a result, Aro “slaughtered the whole village,” and rescued the two young children, changing them into vampires earlier than he had originally planned. Jane’s power to make a person feel like he is in pain stems from the pain she suffered while being burned before her rescue. Since her transformation, she has been a valued member of the Volturi.

In Eclipse, she seems to have the aurora of being the rule enforcer, as she is sent to Seattle to deal with Victoria’s army of vampires. She carries out the questioning of the only surviving member of the army, Bree, while notable figures such as Felix sit in the background doing nothing. During this period, she stresses multiple times that rule breakers should be punished (Eclipse, pg. 576) and ultimately orders Bree killed for her allegiance with Victoria. Jane is present during the climactic meeting with the Cullens in Breaking Dawn.

    Classic Quotes—

“Yes, Master?” (New Moon, pg. 474)

“There are no options for those who break the rules.” (Eclipse, pg. 572)

“Oh, I know,” [In response to being told that she doesn’t have to torture Bree to get information]. (Eclipse, pg. 574)

“Broken rules demand a consequence.” (Eclipse, pg. 576)

“This one [Bella] seems to bring out bizarrely strong reactions in our kind.” (Eclipse, pg. 576)

“It’s too bad we missed the fight. It sounds like it would have been entertaining to watch.” (Eclipse, pg. 577)

“We don’t make exceptions. And we don’t give second chances. It’s bad for our reputation.” (Eclipse, pg. 578)
