Personal History—
Leah Clearwater, daughter of Sue and Harry Clearwater is the only female werewolf of the Quileute tribe.
Before becoming a werewolf, Leah was very much in love with her high school sweetheart, Sam. A direct descendant of the Quileute elders, Sam changed into a werewolf for the first time after the Cullens moved back to Forks. Leah’s relationship with Sam suffered as a result of the transformation because he was unable to tell her that he had become a werewolf. Leah became frustrated that he was keeping things from her but tried to move past that in order to make their relationship work.
One weekend, Leah’s cousin Emily Young came down from the Makah Reservation to visit. Sam imprinted on Emily and because the pull he felt toward Emily was so strong, he was forced to break up with Leah. Leah, in turn, was left heartbroken, not only because she had lost Sam, but because he had fallen in love with Emily with whom she had always been very close. Even though Leah was heartbroken, she put on a brave face in front of everyone and even agreed to be one of Emily’s bridesmaids at her wedding to Sam. (Eclipse, pg. 67)
Before Leah became a werewolf, the Quileute elders always accepted without question that only the direct grandsons of the original wolf had the power to transform. Because of this, Leah’s transformation, (which occurred at the same time as her brother, Seth’s) came as a great shock to everyone. (Eclipse, pg. 240)
Hearing of his children's simultaneous transformations, Harry suffered the heart attack that ultimately took his life.
As a werewolf, Leah was finally able to understand the reason for Sam’s secrets during the end of their relationship as well as the love he felt toward Emily. This new found knowledge fuelled the pain she carried inside and is a driving factor in why she uses the pack’s mind connection to make the pack miserable with her hostile thoughts.
When Jacob broke away from Sam’s pack and formed his own, Leah was the second to join his pack and later became the ‘Beta’ to his ‘Alpha’ status. Because Leah’s brother, Seth, was the first to join the new pack, Leah told Jacob that the only reason she was joining was to make sure no harm came to her younger brother while they were protecting Bella and the Cullens. Later, however, Leah confessed to Jacob that the real reason she joined him was to get away from Sam, saying, “I’m happier now, as a part of your pack, than I have been in years.” (Breaking Dawn, pg. 312)
Classic Quotes—
“This is making me sick, Jacob. Can you imagine what this feels like to me? I don’t even like Bella Swan. And you’ve got me grieving over this leech-lover like I’m in love with her, too. Can you see where that might be a little confusing? I dreamed about kissing her last night! What the hell am I supposed to do with that?” (Eclipse, pg. 622)
“It’s pretty obvious, isn’t it? I’m joining your crappy little renegade pack. The vampires’ guard dogs.” (Breaking Dawn, pg. 255)
“Shut up, Jacob. Oops, I’m sorry – I mean, shut up, most high Alpha.”
(Breaking Dawn pg. 226)
“I think you make a good Alpha. Not in the same way Sam does, but in your own way. You’re worth following, Jacob.” (Breaking Dawn pg. 312)
“I know it’s going to be bad for you, Jacob. I understand that – maybe better than you think. I don’t like her, but… she’s your Sam. She’s everything you want and everything you can’t have.” (Breaking Dawn pg. 315)
“I wasn’t born a compassionless shrew. I used to be sort of nice, you know.”
(Breaking Dawn pg. 316)
