Personal History—

Mike Newton was born in California. When he was 10, his parents moved to Forks, Washington and opened up Newton’s Olympic Outfitters, which profited from all of the hikers in the area. Mike is the popular, athletic boy in school. During Bella’s first day at Forks High School, he is very kind and outgoing.

Although Bella only sees Mike as a friend, he harbors other feelings for her and hopes she will ask him to the spring dance. Jessica asks Mike first, though, and he tells her maybe, in hopes that Bella will ask him. Bella tells Mike she is busy that weekend, in the hopes he will accept Jessica’s invitation.

Mike organizes a trip to First Beach, which is where Bella meets Jacob and learns about the Cullen’s vampire secret. Although Mike has accepted Jessica’s invitation to the dance, he still attempts to take Bella out on a date. When she refuses, Mike ends up taking Jessica, and they date for some time.

When Edward leaves Bella alone in Forks, Bella and Mike regain their friendship. He tries to get Bella to go out with him again and constantly asks her out. Bella decides to go to a movie with him, but invites Jacob to go along as well, much to Mike’s chagrin. That night, Mike gets very ill, along with Jacob, but for very different reasons (New Moon, pg. 211).

Bella invites Mike to her wedding and it appears that Jessica and Mike are starting to act like a couple again (Breaking Dawn, pg. 53). Even though Mike is with Jessica, he still annoys Edward by thinking of Bella in ways that are inappropriate to think about a married woman (Breaking Dawn, pg. 56-57).
