Renée Higginbotham Dwyer

The Basics—

  • Name: Renée Higginbotham Dwyer
  • Date of Birth: 1958
  • Place of Birth: Unknown
  • Current Residence: Jacksonville, Florida
  • Status: Human

Physical Appearance—

  • Hair Color: Brown
  • Eye Color: Blue (Eclipse, pg. 66)
  • Other: Renée is 40 years old and looks like Bella, except with shorter hair and “laugh lines,” (Twilight, pg. 4). Bella thinks her mother is a more beautiful version of herself (Twilight, pg. 105).

Associations—

Personality/Characteristics—

  • Hobbies: Participating in various book clubs, mediation classes, playing tennis, attempting pottery-making, and taking French classes (New Moon, pg. 36.)
  • Interests: Reading, supporting her husband Phil’s baseball career.
  • Description: Renée is a very free sprit (Twilight, pg. 4) and has proven to be extremely perceptive— she picks up on Edward and Bella’s intense relationship immediately. Despite her observational mind, however, Renée can also be characterized as a little childish (Twilight, pg. 66). She loses interest in hobbies quickly (New Moon, pg. 36) and has difficulty staying focused in general. Bella once described her as “absent minded” (Twilight, pg.4). She is young at heart, somewhat irresponsible, outgoing (Twilight, pg.105), and was believed to has a negative view on marrying young— an opinion Bella inherited (Eclipse, pg. 276, 455- 456).

Personal History—

Renée is Bella’s very unpredictable mother who clearly loves her daughter very much, but is not exactly the nurturing type (Twilight, pg. 105). At 18, she married her first husband, Charlie, and had Bella. Shortly thereafter, she and Charlie split up, furthering Renée's rather cynical view of young marriages (New Moon, pg. 451). With baby Bella, she moved to Phoenix, Arizona where she eventually met and fell in love with a young minor league baseball player named Phil Dwyer. She would stay home with Bella when Phil traveled, but was always unhappy with being away from by her new husband (Twilight, pg. 48).

After Bella leaves Arizona to live with Charlie in Forks, Renée moves to Florida when Phil is signed on to play for the Jacksonville Suns (Twilight, pg. 466). In New Moon, Renée visits Forks during Bella’s depression period, worried that she may need hospitalization (New Moon, pg. 396). She misses Bella’s graduation due to Phil’s leg injury (Eclipse, pg. 314), but the mother and daughter stay in communication after Bella’s move to Forks, usually via e-mail (Twilight, pg. 33). In Twilight,, Bella tells Edward that Renée is her best friend, and this close relationship is evident throughout the series.

Miscellaneous—

  • Music: Classical music (Twilight, pg. 105). In fact, Renée even plays the piano (Twilight, pg. 324).

Classic Quotes—

To Bella, about Edward: “I think this boy is in love with you” (Twilight, pg. 467)

About Bella and Edward’s relationship: “Like magnets...or gravity. You’re like a satellite or something. I’ve never seen anything like that.” (Eclipse, pg. 68)

About Bella: “My little middle-aged child” (Breaking Dawn, ch. 1)
